The headline “US Expert Backs Heathrow Expansion” (BD February 15) is not a correct representation of what I told your reporter.

What I said was that London needs more hub airport capacity, and that if it did not get it the City would be weakened in its global competitiveness as alternative hub airports on the continent siphon new international routes, providing London’s de facto third and fourth runways.

While stating that I believed that 15 years was overly optimistic for a new airport to be built in the Thames Estuary, given England’s regulatory environment, I also said that any decisions on London’s hub airport future should be made upon completion of the work of the Davies Commission and other studies.
