Work begins on Pininfarina and Aecom’s 90m tall structure

Work has begun on Pininfarina and Aecom’s tulip-inspired air traffic control tower at Istanbul’s new airport.

Taking an estimated six months to construct, the new 90m tall tower will cover an area of 6,085 sq m.

The joint venture between the Italian architect and the US multi-disciplinary beat off competition from Zaha Hadid, Israeli practice Moshe Safdie, a pairing between Grimsaw and Nordic, Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas and RMJM to land the project, which forms the centerpiece of the new airport complex.

The completed tower includes 17 floors, with a two-floor control level that will cater for 16 staff and include a glass façade enabling a 360 degree panorama view.

Istanbul New Airport is located around 20 miles outside of the city, on the European side, adjacent to the Black Sea.

Once completed it is expected to initially serve 90 million passengers per year but subsequent planned phases will expand the airport to include six runways and three terminal buildings with a capacity to serve 180 million passengers annually.
