Designer Thomas Heatherwick has been appointed to design a £150 million, 49 megawatt biomass power plant in Stockton on Tees, north-east England, BD can exclusively reveal.

The plans, for biomass power company Bio Energy Investments Ltd, are due to be unveiled to the public for consultation later today (Monday), with the project still in design development.

The power plant is intended to occupy a brownfield site in Stockton on the banks of the river Tees.

Matthew Day, agent for the developer, said: “There is no fixed design yet. We’ve still got to present this to the public. We’re really keen to do this properly and not tread on anyone’s toes.”

The power station is due to be submitted for planning early next year.

Heatherwick, who is designing the forthcoming British pavilion at the Shanghai 2010 Expo and was behind the ill-fated B of the Bang public art work in Manchester, is expected to release images of the design next month.
