Winning architects reveal masterplan for massive science project in south London
Haptic Architects and Nordic - Office of Architecture have been appointed to the new 20ha cancer research hub in south London.
The project has been drawn up in partnership with Sutton council and the Institute of Cancer Research with support from the GLA and the Royal Marsden Hospital. When built the cancer hub in Sutton will form the second-largest life science cluster in the world.
New buildings will closely integrate research and cancer care, providing both laboratories and clinical facilities in order to encourage interactions between scientists and clinicians. There will be a new secondary school on site to offer young people a ladder into the sector.
Backers claim the plans include the potential to create more than 13,000 jobs and the discovery of at least two extra cancer drugs every five years.
Director of London-based Haptic Architects Scott Grady said: “Our team is delighted to be working with the partnership on this innovative project. We believe that the opportunity exists for the London Cancer Hub to set a new benchmark for research and healthcare-led masterplanning in the UK, with emphasis on a fully integrated, mixed-use campus that knits well with the town fabric and green character of Sutton.”
