In light of the news that the Young Architect of the Year Award is now to be opened up to Europe (News March 15), I felt, as I am both young and an architect, that I might offer some thoughts.

Phil Coffey, founder of Coffey Architects and winner of YAYA 2012

I agree that the output by young architects of the still United Kingdom may have been curtailed somewhat by the economic climate (Leader March 22) and that competing with our European colleagues may improve the design landscape, but what is clear is that a winner from Europe will be afforded the opportunities that have in the past been offered to the winner of this high-profile prize.

Our European friends would win the award many a time and we would surely, therefore, have to open up the Architect of the Year Awards to Europe as — if one
thing in this life is certain — YAYA winners grow into AYA winners. I’m sure there would be slightly more comment on your pages were this to be the proposal.
