The fire left a flat badly damaged

A fire at the grade II* listed Trellick Tower in north west London has left a flat on the 27th floor of the iconic building badly damaged.

Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters and officers tackled the fire at the 31-storey Erno Goldfinger-designed tower last night, which saw over 200 people evacuated.

The cause of the fire is believed to be a cigarette on the balcony of the 27th floor flat which set bedding and towels alight, the London Fire Brigade said.

There were no reports of any injuries.
