Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios intends its neo-natal intensive care unit for Bath’s Royal United Hospital to serve as a template and catalyst for sustainable healthcare design.
The £3 million project, which has started on site, consists of a one-storey new build extension with a cross-laminated timber structure, plus the refurbishment of the existing unit. The new element will house clinical, support and reception functions. Staff and parents’ facilities will be in the refurbished accommodation.
The strategy has been to minimise energy use, do as much as possible passively, and maximise the sustainability of active systems.
The architect hopes the unit will attain a Breeam Excellent rating. A sustainability champion will disseminate the knowledge of how the building works.
It is due to complete in September 2011.
