Islington and Camden councils will next week unveil details of plans drawn up by Terry Farrell & Partners to look at ways of revamping Mount Pleasant sorting office.

The two north London authorities will publish a planning brief from the architect to give local residents an idea of how the site on the corner of Rosebery Avenue and Farringdon Road might look in the future.

The site covers both boroughs and Farrell’s plans will go on display at Holborn library and a church on Exmouth Market, which is opposite the sorting office site. The proposals will be displayed until December 5.

Farrell’s plans are expected to detail ideas of how the site could be redeveloped to include residential, commercial and leisure space. The sorting office opened in 1889 and is the Post Office’s largest in the capital.

A Post Office spokeswoman said: “Mount Pleasant mail centre will continue to be at the heart of our mail processing and delivery operations in London. We are working with the Camden and Islington planners towards a public consultation that will shape future development plans for the potential non-operational elements of the site.”

Most of the site falls into Islington’s jurisdiction and a council spokeswoman said it would be unveiling details on its website on Monday. She added that it would also link to details posted on Camden’s website.
