Why does the BRE and our Building Control system need to be dictated to by Wolfgang Feist — and where did the magic figure for heating demand of less than 15kWh per sq m per year come from? (“Passivhaus faces ‘major obstacles’ in the UK” bdonline February 1).

Houses

When families come home on a wet winter (or summer) day, soaking wet, they need more than a towel rail to dry their clothes upon — or the single radiator that Passivhaus sometimes espouses.

We are now investing in infrastructure to ensure that there is no fuel poverty. We are backing ourselves into a corner where building costs are escalating and very little is getting built.

The liberal use of sticky tape in the construction of Passivhaus dwellings leads me to believe that the airtightness they so heavily rely upon to achieve their claims will fail in a couple of decades
