I was troubled by Peter Caplehorn’s comment that asbestos is “a historic issue” (Business May 24).

asbestos

It pains me to say that this is still a current issue in many countries. In Baghdad, where I come from, there is still a factory producing it. Tonnes of lethal material stands in open air, causing many deaths.

A few voices calling for an end to this tragedy have little chance of achieving much. I do think the RIBA has a moral obligation to raise the issue, and I extend this to any architect involved in projects in Iraq. As for Zaha Hadid, I cannot think of anyone else whose voice would be more powerful.
