As a Year 6 student weeks away from final hand-in, I am ever more concerned about where all of us are going to be this time next year.

Those with stacks of talent may not need to worry, but for us in the 2:1 (or merit) bracket at a less than top-three university, the number of applicants per place is huge. We need a leg up.

John Assael is an architect who really prioritises education, spending a large amount of his time giving lectures and mentoring his part IIIs in the office. I recently visited his office and he offered to go through my CV with me, even though he has no vacancies at the moment.

Particularly within the larger practices, more time should be given to helping out the bloated “middle section” of hard-working students through gestures like this.
