Director of architecture steps down after six years

Vicky Richardson is leaving the British Council after six years as director of architecture, design and fashion.

She will be replaced by Sarah Mann who previously ran contemporary programming for the National Trust in London and was also head of learning and participation at Somerset House.

Richardson will leave after the Venice Biennale opens on May 28. Her role has included commissioning the curatorial teams for the British Pavilion, including giving FAT its final job.

She has turned the pavilion project into an opportunity for research as well as a chance to showcase British architecture. Since 2012 it has been commissioned through an open competition.

Richardson’s job also involved leading the teams behind the international showcases at London Fashion Week and London Festival of Architecture.

She is leaving to work on exhibition and writing projects and to continue research she began as part of a recent history master’s.

She said: “I am grateful to have worked with a brilliant team, and to have learnt so much about the world over the past six years. Even though I’m leaving the British Council, cultural relations and internationalism will always be an important part of my work and my outlook.”
