Sheppard Robson's Orange building reaches milestone
The external envelope of Sheppard Robson’s Orange building at MediaCity:UK in Salford has been completed.
The 11-storey building, in a prominent position in the £400 million Wilkinson Eyre-designed development, was inspired by the idea of the picture window.
Its south elevation is a full-height glazed wall overlooking a piazza and the waterfront.
Four types of cladding were used to differentiate the separate elements of the building, with fine graduations of colour creating depth and texture, said Alex Solk, associate partner at Sheppard Robson and project architect of Orange.
The most distinctive element is the 3D diamond pattern on the main tower, using cladding made from folded aluminium.
“It is fantastic to be involved in such an exciting new project for the region, and finally seeing the team’s visions turned into reality,” added Solk. “The building has had a dramatic effect on the skyline at Salford Quays.”
It is due to be completed next spring and will become home to 1,500 University of Salford students from the autumn. It also contains shops and speculative office space for media tenants.
