Consented Kings Cross HQ to be entirely redesigned

Google has decided to ditch AHMM’s designs for its Kings Cross headquarters in favour of an even more ambitious scheme.

It has asked the architect to draw up a new design within the original floor plan that will push the boundaries of office design and better fit the needs of the local community, according to a report in Property Week.

A decision to overhaul the project is thought to have been made within the last week. As a result of the change in plans, the building’s completion date is thought to have been moved back from 2016 to 2017.

Google has said it remains committed to the project in the long term.

AHMM took two years to design the original plans, which were revealed in June and featured a roof-top running track and swimming pool. They won planning from Camden Council in September.

At 330m long, the scheme will be a “groundscraper” that would be the length of the Shard if stood on its end — longer than Google’s 220m New York headquarters.

Joe Borrett, head of real estate and construction at Google, said: “We have a great plan for the new building at Kings Cross but we want to challenge ourselves to do something even better for Google, Kings Cross and for the local community.”

AHMM declined to comment.

  • Has AHMM been instructed to re-design so as to provide space for a new sub tenant ( aka NSA) ?

  • achitects 'design' buildings whereas bd seems to think architects 'draw up' a design ... question: Who is the designer then. Or is BD so entrenched on it's view on what architects do. Which begs the question: Why does BD have such a following?

  • Looks like the Google dictum 'Fail fast' also applies to their real estate strategy

  • Pierre - as far as I can tell, what architects "do" is sit on websites all day hoping for a chance to self-righteously nitpick over some perfectly valid figure of speech.

Your comment contains several grammatical errors, by the way.

  • Architect for google happier than a hog in mud scum. And why not? they now have guaranteed work for years to come. More clients should be like google, because most architectural designs in london are too commercial boring and ugly as the streets

  • I'm glad Google changed the brief. AHMM's scheme was not nearly up to their usual high standard of design.
