Brazil launches 2016 Olympic Park competition
Winner to be named by the middle of July
An international competition to masterplan the Olympic Park for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil has been launched.
It is being coordinated by the Brazilian Institute of Architects and will be completed in one stage.
The 2016 Olympic Park will be 1.18 million sq m and will feature 15 different sports including swimming, cycling and tennis. The organisers have asked participating teams to consider the transformation of the park from Olympic to legacy mode.
Organisers added that teams should be multidisciplinary and led by an urban planner architect “with experience in projects of similar complexity”. Teams have until June 15 to register their interest with the deadline for proposals set for June 30.
A judging panel – which includes members of the Rio government, the national government and the Institute of Architects – will make its decision in early July with the winner due to be announced on July 13.
