Architect gives journalists the finger

Frank Gehry described 98% of modern architecture as “pure shit” during a press conference when he also gave reporters the finger.

The architect was responding to a question about what he would say to people who dismiss his architecture as being about spectacle.

He reportedly said: “Let me tell you one thing. In the world we live in, 98% of everything that’s built and designed today is pure shit. There’s no sense of design, no respect for humanity or for anything. They’re bad buildings and that’s it.”

“Once in a while, however, a group of people do something special. Very few but, God, leave us alone,” he went on.

“We are dedicated to our work. I don’t ask for work… I work with clients who respect the art of architecture. Therefore, please don’t ask questions as stupid as that one.”

He went on to talk about the remarkable difference that the striking design of his Guggenheim gallery had made to the fortunes of Bilbao.

He later apologised and blamed jetlag for his irritable response. He had flown to northern Spain from the opening of his new LVMH Foundation for Creation in Paris.

The architect was in Oviedo to collect the Prince of Asturias prize from the king of Spain.

  • Do I assume from this he thinks he is part of the 2%?

  • He is soooo right. The boring dull grey blocks of flats and cheap offices that litter our urban environment are everywhere. Time to stop it - bring architecture back to our cities!

  • This is not correct. He said that 98% of what is built is rubbish - here is the complete quote -

"In this world we are living in, 98% of everything that is built and designed today is pure shit. There’s no sense of design, no respect for humanity or for anything else. They are damn buildings and that’s it. Once in a while, however, a group of people do something special. Very few, but God, leave us alone."

  • Yup! all architecture is rancid ugly concrete shit. The man tell the truth. The only architecture that is any good are those that are imaginary, every executed architecture built or on paper is turgid turd. Give Gehry a beer! DAMMIT! No truer words have been said about the deluded world of wastepipe architecture that has mushroomed the world over like bleeding chickenpox.

  • Actually Frank is complimenting the whole of the profession, since globaly architects are about 0.05% of a population (Western typically, lower elsewhere), for 2% of the buildings to be good is quite an achievement.

Its no surprise the majority of buildings are bad when there are so few architects.

He still didn't answer the questions though, as the truth hurts his ego.

There is a lot of poor design that springs from a basic lack of understanding on how buildings are put together. I keep thinking about producing a book for students on sh#t detailing as there does seem to be a huge and worrying gulf between those who know how buildings are built and actually get built (the clue as to why this is important is in the word!) and those who think architecture somehow magically transcends the need to know about these realities. (Would it be churlish to bring up any joke made in TED talks about managing to have building that don't leak as being something unusual? Gehry does give a great performance in these, worth a google)

I think Chunfla's amusing and silly little rant helps make this point (and made me laugh!)

  • It reminds of the classic outburst from that infamous guru of good taste ,Gerald Ratner who announced that his own products as "total crap" and "cheaper than an M&S prawn sandwich but probably wouldn't last as long". OK, not exactly the same....but perhaps may have an effect ....and may bring about a return to some decent criticism instead of this "sitting on the fence" which prevails in the current environment. It appears we've become "grey" or several shades of, and are only provoked to put a finger above the parapet when someone else "goes over the top". Perhaps not the most eloquent of speeches from Frank but at least he's putting out his stall and placing the products there for all to see. Now let us see what we , as the prerogative 98% can do with it or are you are trying to squeeze into the 2% room still. (I wonder why 98%?....not 99% or 95% which are more obvious numbers..............did anyone ask that question?)
