Urban design firm Turley Associates is set to submit a planning application for a 100m-long footbridge in Hungerford, Berkshire.

The firm expects to submit plans to West Berkshire Council this summer and hopes work on the bridge can start later in the year.

The bridge would cross the Kennet & Avon Canal, supplementing a nearby road bridge, which is considered too narrow and dangerous for people to walk across.

Turley director Matt Quayle said the bridge would be made of steel and is designed to reference the canal’s industrial heritage.

The firm is set to work with local schoolchildren whose designs will be incorporated into the deck of the structure.

A council spokeswoman said the idea for a footbridge in the town had first been suggested more than 70 years ago.
