The most recent UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) statistics recorded 35 fatal injuries from falls, accounting for 25% of all worker deaths over the year. Over 60% of deaths during working at height involve falls from ladders, scaffolds, working platforms, roof edges and through fragile roofs.

In addition to this, the Building Safety Group (BSG) reported an 84% increase in the number of working at height breaches occurring on construction sites during the first quarter of 2021.

It is therefore crucial that all those in the industry understand the latest safety legislation, accept responsibility for ensuring compliance, and make sure that the right systems are in place to reduce risk and that these are used correctly.

CDM regulations stipulate that a “principal designer” (often the architect) is responsible for CDM compliance, including eliminating hazards and reducing risk.
