Firm is one of three chasing science centre job

Proposals by Simpson Haugh for a science and innovation centre in Lithuania are among those being displayed in an online gallery by competition organiser Malcolm Reading Consultants.

The Manchester practice came second out of a trio that have been negotiating with the city of Kaunas, the country’s second largest, to see which one gets chosen.

Called Science Island, the scheme has a €25 million project value with the project attracting 144 entries from 44 countries.

As well as designs by Simpson Haugh, proposals by SMAR Architecture Studio, from Australia and Spain, and Chinese practice Donghua Chen Studio which came first and third respectively will also be available to see. Designs by five highly commended firms will be able to be seen as well.

Science Island will celebrate recent achievements in science and global technologies with the aim of inspiring visitors to expand their knowledge and support innovation. The 13,000sq m centre will sit on the city’s Nemunas Island.

Work is expected to start early next year and be completed in 2018.
