Paul Davis & Partners has beaten practices including RMJM, B3 and The Boyd Partnership in an £8 million international competition to design a zero-carbon housing development in Northern Ireland.

The London-based practice impressed the judges, chaired by housing expert Dickon Robinson, with its approach to the code level 5 requirement as well as the “graceful” way it responded to a challenging sloping site.

More than 60 European teams entered the competition to design the 70 homes on the edge of the village of Carryduff, just south of Belfast. They were whittled down to a shortlist of five before the winner was chosen.

PD&P’s houses have enclosed winter gardens and roofs angled at 29 degrees to maximise photo-voltaic and solar thermal collection.

The homes, to be built by Oaklee Homes over the next 30 months, are funded by the Department of Social Development.
