New building will replace smaller 1980s block

Shell Centre redevelopment architect Squire & Partners has been given planning for a scheme in London’s King’s Cross which will see a 1980s office block knocked down and replaced with a nine-storey building with three times as much space.

The existing six-storey block called the Fitzpatrick Building was designed by Chassay Architects but this week Islington planners OK’d fresh plans for the site which will see the amount of office space grow from 5,100sq m to 15,800sq m.

The building at 188 York Way is just north of King’s Cross railway station and a stone’s throw away from a residential building Squires has designed at Argent’s nearby King’s Cross Central development. Called R3, this 61 apartments scheme – the practice’s first at King’s Cross Central – was given planning last November.

Work space on its latest deal is being aimed at small to medium creatives and will include winter gardens and an external roof terrace.

Developer on the scheme is Deepdale Investments.

Squires is due to move from its current King’s Cross home to new premises in Brixton next summer.
