20 Carlton House Terrace was Anglo American’s HQ for two decades

RSHP has unveiled images of its scheme to revamp a 1970s building close to Trafalgar Square called 20 Carlton House Terrace.

The job was completed last summer with the work seeing the existing building increased by four floors to bring space up to 162,000 sq ft across 11 storeys.

The 1970s-built block was the home of mining giant Anglo American for two decades until it moved out in 2020.

RSHP’s scheme has previously been described to would-be tenants by developers Clivedale and Altius Real Estate as “the ultra-prime modern workplace for your people and future plans”.

The building includes a repositioned double-height reception, a fully glazed lift group connecting all floors and a new atrium flooding the lower levels with natural light. Rooftop terraces have also been added.

Altius said around 80% of the building had been pre-let with tenants taking space there including oil and gas giant BP. Fit out work at BP’s office had been due to be carried out by ISG but it is understood this was taken over by Structure Tone after ISG collapsed 16 months ago.

The job was redeveloped by Blue Sky Building with others working on the job including demolition and enabling works contractor Erith as well as façade contractor Colorminium.

Consultants working on the deal included QS Core Five and structural engineer Elliott Wood, along with executive and interiors architect EPR.
