Building provides a new home for the Medical Research Council within Hammersmith Hospital

Hawkins Brown’s new Medical Research Council London Institute of Medical Sciences building within the Hammersmith hospital campus has been completed.

Jointly commissioned by the Medical Research Council (MCR) and Imperial College London, it will provide a new home for the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences.

The facility brings together clinical and non-clinical scientists within a collaborative research environment while offering training and mentorship to a new generation of scientists.

The eight-storey building is clad in subtle shades of anodised aluminum and the entrance features perforated panels covered with dynamic patterns inspired by research work across the LMS.

Internally, specialist facilities and multipurpose labs are designed as flexible containers that can be adapted as needs change in the future. Write-up and touchdown areas are marked by a colour palette of warm, neutral and balanced tones to create areas that feel homely, calm and welcoming.

Providing 12,000 sq m of advanced research facility, opportunities for socialising and collaboration are dotted throughout the building.

The central staircase and atrium establish a visual connection between all floors and provide direct access to breakout spaces and tea points while letting in ample amounts of natural light. The seventh-floor café sits next to an external terrace area offering spectacular views across London.

Carol Lees, partner at Hawkins Brown, said: “The LMS carefully weaves together highly controlled laboratory environments with write-up neighbourhoods that have a warmer, homely feel to support researchers’ sense of wellbeing. We placed a heavy emphasis on breakout areas, circulation spaces and cafés to encourage chance encounters and collaboration.”
