Lower Manhattan church and national memorial replaces modest building destroyed in September 11 attacks
Santiago Calatrava’s new St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in New York has been officially consecrated, more than two decades after its predecessor was destroyed in the September 11 attacks.
The architect said the stone-clad structure, on a plot directly above the World Trade Center Vehicle Security Center at the eastern end of Liberty Park, was a “beacon of hope and rebirth” for its congregation and visitors to the reconstructed World Trade Center site.
The church’s exterior is comprised of four solid stone clad towers that define a square in plan; a circle inscribed within the square consists of a drum and dome with thin stone/glass laminated panels that are illuminated from behind.
