How the expansion will look when built

Plans for a £33.5m expansion of film and television production facilities in Hartlepool have been given the green light.

The Northern Studios, which opened in 2022, will undergo an expansion, including the construction of larger studios and the installation of industry-leading equipment and facilities.

In addition, a production village will be developed in the surrounding area, repurposing nine disused buildings into pre and post-production spaces, workshops and collaborative hubs.

Architect on the job is Leonard Design while others working on the scheme include development manager Time & Space and Stace, which is acting as QS and project manager.

The Shades Hotel will be among several heritage buildings that will be revamped under the plans

Among the buildings to be revamped is the grade-II listed Shades Hotel, which opened in the 1850s but has been shut for more than 50 years. Several other nearby heritage properties will also be brought back into use.

Work is set to start next year although no contractor has yet been appointed.

The project is being led by Hartlepool Borough Council, in partnership with The Northern School of Art, Tees Valley Combined Authority and North East Screen, the region’s screen industries development agency. Funding for the project has been secured from the government and Tees Valley Investment Zone.
