Chancellor John Healey, visiting the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry last month, wants public sector jobs to use more UK suppliers

The government has said it will publish a new definition for a UK supplier in public procurement by January next year.

It said the move was part of a plan to “better understand and track UK suppliers and subcontractors across public supply chains”.

In yesterday’s Budget, chancellor John Healey said the move was to “ensure economic resilience in key supply chains, safeguarding UK sovereign capabilities”.

In a briefing note accompanying the Budget, the Treasury added: “For too long, broad definitions have allowed companies with little more than a UK post box to be classed as a UK firm.”

The same document also said that a “new National Procurement Policy Statement will be laid in Parliament in March 2027, prioritising delivery of high-quality jobs, fair pay and skills opportunities”.
