New London Architecture (NLA) and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets are inviting tenders for new “visual focal points” at Whitechapel Market worth £200,000.

The call to tender is for “unique, bold and visually striking” designs to act as “gateways” to the famous East End of London street market.

Architects, landscape architects, designers and artists are invited to submit designs which will improve accessibility and connectivity, complement the existing streetscape and comply with the Whitechapel Market Conservation area.

The designs will need to prioritise pedestrian road safety while not inhibiting traffic. The scheme might involve signage, public areas, planting and greening, elevated gateways, meeting areas, digital art or sculpture.

The deadline for tender applications is 14th July, with estimated contract dates of November 2025 to October 2026. The entire value of the project is £240,000 including VAT.

At the shortlisting stage, bidders will be asked to develop a design concept and will be awarded an honorarium of £2,000.
