Gustafson Porter and Wilkinson Eyre with Bath-based practice Grant Associates have won a landmark competition to design three large waterfront parks in Marina Bay, Singapore.

The practices saw off competition from some of the world’s leading architects, including Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas and Will Alsop, to land the prestigious job.

The massive complex, known as the Gardens by the Bay, will include a 54 ha garden at Marina South, a 30ha water-themed park in Marina East and a 10ha park along the waterfront in Marina Centre (News 5 May).

Director Mary Bowman said: “It’s a fantastic project in a brilliant place and we are really looking forward to working on it.”

Kiat Tan, chair of the jury, said: “The eight [shortlisted] designs were of very high quality and provided many creative and excellent design ideas for the gardens. Having given due consideration to the aesthetic appeal, implementability and flexibility of the designs, the jury was unanimous in its decision that there were two designs that best met the gardens’ vision and programmatic brief. It decided that the two teams be awarded as joint winners of the competition.”
