RIBA competition jury for next generation pylon included disgraced energy secretary Chris Huhne

National Grid has submitted plans to build the first series of next generation pylons designed by architects Bystrup.

The Danish firm was chosen as the winner of an RIBA competition in 2011, beating off practices including Amanda Levete Architects and Gustafson Porter, by a jury including disgraced energy secretary Chris Huhne.

The training line of six T-pylons will be built at National Grid’s Eakring Training Centre in Nottinghamshire, with each pylon standing 35m tall and spaced 200m apart. Some of the pylons will be coated with a different surface finish to see how well they blend into the landscape.

The line will be used to teach engineers how to construct, maintain and work with the new structures.

If the plans are approved by Newark and Sherwood District Council, construction will start in late spring.
