Rick Mather Architects has completed the first phase of its £3.5 million redevelopment of Stowe School in Buckinghamshire.

The practice designed a two-phase scheme to provide accommodation for boarders at the public school after a masterplanning exercise it conducted for the historic site.

The first phase, called Queen’s House, includes staff flats and accommodation for 60 boarders.

The design responds to the grade I listed school through its use of Bath stone, and maximises the potential of the school’s historic grounds which were reworked by landscape architect Capability Brown in the 1740s.

The architect used zinc roofing to reflect the character of existing buildings on the site.

Rick Mather said: “It’s a lovely setting. There are terraces off the main common room so you can really engage with the landscape in a way that traditionally didn’t happen.”
