Why do we never hear it for Ian Martin? He has written a great column for years.
I always find the first half hilarious and the second half surreal as I realise he is describing the real world out there — the talking heads of the design review bodies, the quangos, the enablers, the public realm facilitators etc etc.
In the meantime the built environment is, with few exceptions, sliding into low-cost, quick-fix, short-life construction solutions. You want 60,000 houses? Where’s that cedar cladding, galvanised balustrading and single-ply roofing?
Ian’s column should be required reading for smug ministers and politicians downwards, who might then be able to see themselves as others see them.
