First look inside the transformed Commonwealth Institute building
The Design Museum has unveiled an album of images showing its new home in west London taking shape.
The £80 million project is transforming RMJM’s grade II* former Commonwealth Institute on Kensington High Street into a bigger space for the Design Museum which is currently housed at Shad Thames near Tower Bridge.
John Pawson is remodelling the museum’s interior and Reinier de Graaf of OMA is designing three residential buildings around the plot with Allies & Morrison.
Studio Myerscough is designing the displays for the permanent collection, which will be free to visit for the first time.
Fabrique are behind the museum’s new digital identity and Cartlidge Levene are creating the wayfinding and signage system.
The museum takes possession of the site in October 2014 to begin its fit out with the museum opening to the public in 2016.
