Architect beats Wright & Wright, Alison Brooks and RCKa

Science Museum Exhibition Road

Duggan Morris has won the competition to design a new event space for the Science Museum.

The practice beat what the museum described as a “strong shortlist” featuring Alison Brooks Architects, RCKa, Wright & Wright and Originate.

The dedicated events space will sit across the top two levels of the museum to capitalise on its views over London. With a capacity of up to 400 people per floor, its purpose is to boost the South Kensington institution’s coffers.

The competition was organised by Platform 5 Consultants. Jury member Michelle Lockhart, the museum’s commercial director, said: “We are delighted with the quality of the architects’ submissions. Duggan Morris’ proposal creates a beautiful space, well-suited to our high-profile clients.”

Design and consultation work is now underway with the new space due to open in 2018.

The practice will act as lead consultant and develop the scheme from RIBA stage 2 to stage 7. The museum will appoint the remainder of the design team through the museum’s existing frameworks.
