Ben Flatman discovers how Barr Gazetas is redefining what a sustainable practice can be – from its commitment to retrofit and social value to a culture of openness and long-term responsibility within the team

Founded in 1993, Barr Gazetas has grown from a two-person studio into a 65-strong London practice that has evolved into something unusual in British architecture: a business that takes its own internal culture, sustainability and governance as seriously as design. Now an employee-owned trust (EOT) and the UK’s highest-scoring B Corp architectural firm, it has built a reputation for rigorous but understated work at the forefront of retrofit and reuse.

“We’re cautious in our size, but we are growing slowly and carefully,” says managing director Jon Eaglesham. That steady expansion speaks of a practice as interested in maintaining its ethos as growing the balance sheet. Its recent B Corp certification was less of a branding exercise and more of an audit of values: how the firm treats its people, manages impact and prioritises a broader sense of purpose.
