Poundbury has been a tremendous success and should be celebrated as such. There is much to learn from the way it has been planned both in terms of design and procurement.

Many years ago I went to a lecture by URBED where they demonstrated that the same planning strategy can allow for a number of very different appearances while creating the same interstitial public spaces which we all love (or hate if they are bad).

There is no reason why Poundbury couldn't feel contemporary other than the patron's predisposition.

For a contemporary attempt on a smaller scale one might consider FCB Studios Accordia, Cambridge and Lime tree square, Street for Clarke Shoes - one expensive and one trying to achieve similar things on a significantly lower budget. No doubt URBED and others would be able to suggest other examples. It could make for a very interesting spread or thesis!
