Bribery is not an easy thing to define....try explaining that to a Japanese businessman where it's a cultural norm as it is in most Asian countries. So we don't work there anymore? We deal with these issues almost on a daily basis, I hasten to add not as a receiver or giver but as a spectator. Just recently a lucrative contract was awarded to a UK design firm in the Middle East because an agent (business development manager) was paid to secure it with his influence. We watched in disbelief as no money changed hands (Islamic Banking I think) and the courts in the UK will have one hell of a job to follow any audit trail to prove anything.
