Rather than this building being a conceit too far, this review is a self indulgence too far, reminiscent of the vitriolic treatment that Alsop's extension to Goldsmith's College received at the hands of this seemingly increasingly self-serving individual, a few years ago. Clearly Woodman likes Tony Fretton, Sergison Bates, Caruso St John and a whole bunch of their followers. It is revealing how much of the criticsm he has levelled at Hadids building should have been directed at the client; the misgivings regarding the site, budget, collection, even the choice of Hadid as architect (because lets face, one knows what one will get with her). These are all aspects outside Hadid's control. I'm by no means a great fan of Hadid but it is striking how at variance with the commentary the pictures are in this review. These pictures speak much better of the building that Woodman's words do, revealing a tour de force totally at home in the city which houses Michelangelo and Bernini at their loudest. Say what you want about Hadid but she demonstrates remarkable consistency (a Hedgehog rather than a fox). The result of this is that building by building she is becoming a master of her art while thoese whom Woodman champions (and I am a fan of theirs too) are still finding their feet. If the building is half as exciting as it looks in the photos then it will be a justified success. Hadid now looks like a real Pritker winner. It's clear that Woodman comes off much worse in this article than Hadid's building does
