BD takes a look at the workspaces of architects

Robert Adam said: “No time to make it look good. I know they say a tidy desk is a tidy mind but perhaps it’s also a not-much-else-to-do mind.  Looking at the chaos, there is a story to tell: computer and phone in the foreground (communication first); design of a building on the screen; business cards in front of the keyboard (reminders for who I should be contacting); lists of things to do on each side of keyboard; overflowing in-tray to the right; a small jade Ganesh next to the screen (remover of obstacles and Lord of Beginnings - an apposite present from an Indian client); Japanese Trade Delegation mouse mat; RIBA Practice Member Card and Prince’s Foundation lapel pin on the desk; Journal of Architecture, BD, Country Life, Estates Gazette waiting to be read behind; reference books on Roman and classical architecture in the background. That says it all.”

I like this desk; it has a convincing level of clutter and I think no aesthetic pretentions.

I'm no classicist but this guy has just gone up in my opinion.
Blatantly putting two fingers up to the pretentious Shoreditch archi-hipsters with their sparse desks (and sparse workloads) meticulously staged with an Apple iMac and some carefully arranged tracing paper to make them look 'creative'.
Real desk. Real business. No doubt cashing real cheques.
    This guy is ballin'.

That's more ruddy like it! A bit of mess!

Is that a Katsushika Hokusaii - Three Beauty mouse pad I spot? Nice mix of traditional values in a modern product; yes please!

    Great desk!

  • Ballin'....rollin in mad fortune and fame....as defined by the 'Urban Dictionary'.

Proper work desk. Sophie thinks he's stuck in the past? That, my friend, is why you'll always be an assistant in some over edgy under worked office of cool.
