The 2009 Pritzker Prize laureate Peter Zumthor has been chosen to design next year’s Serpentine Gallery Pavilion.

The Swiss architect will draw up plans for the 11th annual temporary structure in London’s Hyde Park.

Zumthor has never completed a building in the UK, though he is currently working on a holiday home near Chivelstone for Alain de Botton’s venture, Living Architecture, which is due to finish in late 2011.

The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is usually built within six months of the architect’s invitation for the commission and hosts a number of events over the summer. The structure is then sold off privately, to help recoup part of the construction costs.

This year’s pavilion was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel.

It is expected that Arup will provide engineering support and developer Stanhope will also help to deliver the scheme.

Lovely to have Zumtoblerone designing the Serpentine Pavilion this year. We cannot all visit Alain de Bottom's holiday cottage, but the architectural sub-elite will make it round to Hyde Park for a quick set of digital photos.
