Metz's Viking college opens
Metz Architects’ £34 million new campus for South Leicestershire College has opened.
The new building, in South Wigston, is decorated by a huge sculpture inspired by the site’s Viking history.
Matt Harding, a director of Metz, said the five storey building, which includes a café, gym and library for the further education college, had been designed with a “prow” around which the artist was asked to design a piece.
“She took some reference points from Viking myth because there was a Viking settlement in Wigston,” he explained.
The building, which covers 11,500 sq ft, is steel framed and covered with insulated render.
Work started on the project in January 2009.
It was funded by the now defunct Learning and Skills Council.
