Richard Murphy reveals competition designs for Chinese whisky distillery

Richard Murphy Architects has unveiled early competition designs for a major whisky distillery HQ, hotel and conference centre in China

The proposal, for a site in Szechuan Province where Lang Jiu whisky is distilled, was presented to the client last month alongside rival plans by a Californian practice. Amendments to both schemes are now under way.

The building would sit above the stunning gorge of the Red River as it flows past the small town of Erlang in a remote corner of Szechuan, with Murphy’s design referencing the shape of traditional Chinese landscape bridges.

It is great that Richard Murphy Architects has dumped their reverence for Carlo Scarpa and moved on to worship Morris Lapidus resort designs (mixed with hints of Czechoslovakian socialist chic). Well done! Very exciting!

  • Great, so lets appoint a Scottish Architect to design a facility which threatens and opposes what remains of the fragile and frail scottish economy. Maybe Gareth Hoskins could apply for a job on the Chinese Tourist Board!

Justin has a point. And in doing so Richard Murphy Architects may upset the Macallan drinking Scottish architectural establishment who have backed them in the past.

Are you sure BD didn't publish the Californian architects' scheme in error. This is more LA or Vegas than a cutting edge Scottish vision for China. Liberace would love it.

  • Why did Richard Murphy and his associates get into bed with Chinese Whiskey magnates? It is a shade unpatroitic.

Barry, we all need to get into bed with foreigners to survive the recession.

  • Fully understand the short term struggle for survival but even when it eats away at your own bedrock...

Next time I am in Edinburgh I will have drop off a bottle of Macallan at Richard Murphy Architects' offices, as clearly these guys can no longer survive the recession on games of squash, cold showers, organic museli and carrot cake any more.

  • It looks quite Chinese and modern, in a nice way. Richard did well to get this style to work. I reckon Colin St. John Wilson was the only british architect who managed to do this before (with the outside of the British Library, which may have been an accident). It builds on a great british Tradition. For example, Sir William Chambers work at Kew Gardens.

Have Richard and his youthful team thought twice about the morality of working in China? Or did he need the cash?
