Architect Harper Downie submits plans for Boxpark-style scheme in Southwark
Plans have been submitted for a temporary shopping village built from shipping containers on the Heygate Estate in Elephant & Castle.
Architect Harper Downie is behind the proposal which is reminiscent of the Boxpark concept which opened in Shoreditch 18 months ago.
Harper Downie has developed proposals for The Artworks Elephant with the estate’s developer Lend Lease and Southwark Council.
The project was chosen after the council invited ideas for how parts of the estate could be used for up to five years before redevelopment takes place.
According to the project’s website: “The Artworks project will offer a range of spaces for hire for designer-makers and creative businesses, together with a café and bar.
“These spaces are situated within recycled and refurbished shipping containers and set amongst new public open spaces.”
