This is Nicoll Russell Studio’s long-awaited, competition-winning design for the £30 million Calyx project in Perth, Scotland.

The practice, working with landscape architect Gillespies, won an RIAS-organised competition for the scheme to promote health, education and environmental awareness. It beat Snøhetta, Benson & Forsyth, and Ushida Findlay in 2004.

A 6,100sq m visitor building at the heart of the site incorporates education facilities, seminar rooms, function suites, information and exhibition areas.

Partner Willie Watt said: “In times when our public realm is so pressurised and eroded by commercial developments on precious parkland, this project offers the vision and generosity of the great public works of the Victorian age.”
