Abraham Thomas has been appointed the new director of the Sir John Soane’s Museum in London.

Thomas, currently curator of designs and lead curator for architecture at the V&A, will take up his appointment on December3.

“I have always considered the Soane to be an extraordinary container of ideas and I’m thrilled at the prospect of working closely with the staff and trustees to explore boldly Sir John Soane’s original vision for his building and wide-ranging collections – a legacy which I believe can offer immeasurable relevance for today’s world,” said Thomas.

He replaces Tim Knox, who left last year to become the director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

  • What Sir John Soane's Museum needs is a stuffy academic who will stop trying to turn it into a crowd-pleasing "experience".

  • It's already a theatrical experience, with a cast of thousands, as it were.

The wonderfull thing about Soane's Museum is its complete irrelevance to the dominant concerns of the modern world. It is where we go to experience the perfect antithesis of international modernism.
