Last of the big spenders - Schmidt Hammer Lassen's City of Westminster College
Against news of higher education cuts the finishing touches are being made to a college building from another era – Schmidt Hammer Lassen’s City of Westminster College
The Danish firm’s £102 million scheme, to open early next year, is the highest value single site redevelopment funded under the Learning & Skills Council’s college rebuilding programme.
Last year, the programme descended into farce when dozens of projects were cut because of massive budget shortfalls.
The Westminster scheme, will include state-of-the-art science laboratories, a large sports hall and meeting rooms as well as offering community access to new facilities including a 140-seat theatre and a public café overlooking the neighbouring St Mary’s Gardens.
At its heart will be a natural light-filled atrium which will act as a meeting and circulation space for staff and students.
Work on the seven-storey building is due to be wrapped up at the end of this year.
