Building for life
Councils will audit homes design
Local authorities will now have to report annually on the design quality of new housing built in their areas by marking their performance against a set of 20 Building for Life criteria.
The criteria, jointly promoted by Cabe and the Home Builders Federation, measure the quality of design and construction, as well as how the buildings fit with their surroundings.
Matt Bell, director of campaigns at Cabe, said this effectively represents a rolling housing audit.
He added: “The publication of performance against this measure… sends a very clear message to planners that quality is as important as speed and volume.”
