Carbuncle Cup 2013 open for nominations

The UK’s most controversial architecture prize is back

The competition that architects love to hate is now open for nominations from architects and the wider architectural community.

At BD, we believe it’s important to celebrate success, but also to shine a light on the thousands of projects that should, and could, have been better. These projects make up the vast bulk of new buildings in the UK and are rarely publicised.

Previous nominees have run the gamut from social housing to prominent public projects, skyscrapers and starchitect-designed projects.

A judging panel will be announced next month.

How to nominate

Send you nominations to bdonline@ubm.com with a short citation (a brief description of why you think the building should be nominated) and, if possible, at least one picture.

A nomination will be published each week on Bdonline - those with multiple nominations will be selected first.

  • A constructive way of addressing any shortfall in what is perceived to be a less than successful project is before it is built; i.e. at Planning. What is achieved by this competition other than (often unfair) negative publicity? Perhaps more would be achieved by BD promoting a competition directed at the Planning process; unless BD is comfortable with this level of tabloid journalism.

  • Ruairi, if you don't like it, don't read the column. There is every reason to draw attention to poor design.

Perhaps you think that the mess that has been made of the Liverpool waterfront, for example, should be quietly overlooked?

A good-natured chivvying of the design process is not only harmless, but also demonstrates the profession's ability to look critically upon itself. The only possible damage is to those who feel they might have something to be ashamed of...

I second Sceptical, but wouldn't know where to start with the citations.

  • While Hadid is usually good for a carbuncle, has she done anything as grossly overscaled, poorly detailed and ill-conceived as Renzo Piano's hubristic so called 'Shard'?

  • Here's one:

The Francis Crick Building, designed by HOK with PLP Architecture, just completing behind the British Library. A real plonker. I have to walk past it every day and it just gets worse and worse.
