Staff numbers up but profits at Arup Associates’ parent slip

Revenues at Arup Associates’ parent went up last year as staff numbers at Arup broke the 12,000 barrier.

The engineer saw overall turnover rise 7% to £1.1 billion with staff numbers jumping nearly 800 to 12,143. But pre-tax profits in the year to March 2015 fell to £33 million from £40 million.

The UK remains the firm’s biggest market with nearly £300 million of workloads followed by Asia and the Americas.

In a statement accompanying the results, the firm’s chairman Gregory Hodkinson said: “Expansion in Europe and Asia-Pacific was particularly good to see, driven by stronger demand for buildings and civil infrastructure in those regions.”

But he warned: “The global economic climate remains uncertain, with impacts on both private sector growth and public sector investment.”

Last month Arup Associates unveiled its plans to replace Peter Foggo’s early Broadgate buildings with an office complex including a 32-storey tower for British Land.

Foggo designed 2 & 3 Finsbury Avenue Square when he worked for the firm. They opened in 1986 and, along with No1 which was listed at grade II last year, were the earliest parts of the landmark City development.
