BD takes a look at the workspaces of architects

Ken Shuttleworth said: “Make’s studio is completely open plan and I sit on the end of a row of desks in the heart of the office - there is always a real buzz here and I like being in ‘the thick of it’.

“I think my desk reflects the ethos of Make - as an employee-owned practice with a non-hierarchical structure we operate in a very open and transparent way. I try to be as informal as possible and because I don’t have my own office or a separate desk I am more approachable - anyone can stop by and have a chat and there is a refreshing lack of protocol.

“I sit on the end of the workbench so I am right by the window and get lots of natural light and a great view of the street. This is really sociable because people wave to me when they walk past - people I know as well as complete strangers!”

    |Bit like their buildings, cluttered, no space and looks like a call centre.

Differences in architectural taste are no excuse for rudeness.

  • I agree 100% with irene1000, but disagree with London. Can't see any architectural taste at work at this desk.

It's the same as many other desks in other Arup buildings, only a little less tidy than your average building services or public health engineer.

  • Oh, right - it's all very egalitarian but he has the best seat in the office with the best daylight and he regally allows anyone to speak to him. How progressive.

Never mind his office it's his home I'm interested in. Perhaps he'd like to spend a year living in Woods House which his practice designed. Then something might be done about the overheated and noise ridden flats.

  • It constantly amazes me how a person with zero architectural ability has managed to get so far and be so successful.
