Architects' desks: Joe Morris, director Duggan Morris Architects
BD takes a look at the workspaces of architects
Joe Morris said: “In August last year, we received an ‘out of the blue’ phone call from a design firm in Tokyo inviting us to take part in a four day workshop to develop concepts for a new cultural centre.
“The timing was particularly peculiar. Japan was in a post earth-quake and tsunami meltdown with its Fukushima 1 nuclear reactor smoking away on the north east coast. The devastation had caused a rationing of its electrical power, and as Japan was moving into high summer, the air conditioning on half mast meant the searing temperatures and 100% humidity were almost beyond bearable.
“This desk in central Tokyo was our office for the entire four days, shared with a team of five Japanese architects and engineers. Despite the language barrier, the collaboration was intense and fruitful. A memory Mary (Duggan) and I will not forget.”
